This page shows the design and process of creating matt, an app acting to break the habit of mindlessly scrolling on your phone.
Many of us waste hours a day scrolling on our phones. Sometimes picking up our phones can be more autopilot than a conscious choice. It’s easy to fall into the trap of social media algorithms and lose hours every day. What if there was something to nudge you to put the phone down and do something that brings you more value long-term?
matt does this through a widget placed on the home screen and a corresponding app. The user can customize what habits they are interested in and pick when during the day they would want to get nudged to perform these habits. The widget can be placed close to the apps that the user wants to spend less time on and serve as a visual trigger for the user to not open the apps and do some other activity instead. The goal is that the user will get reminded of how they would rather spend their time and for these small changes to have a larger impact long term.
